Welcome to Tattoos by Joe Stevens!

My name is Joe Stevens, and I’ve been tattooing professionally for over 21 years here in Columbus, Ohio. I began my tattoo career apprenticing in Maryland at Explosive Tattoo under JJ Simon as well as Robbi McKee, where I learned the importance of respecting the craft and doing tattoos the right way from the ground up.

I’ve always been drawn to art, but skateboarding, punk rock, and tattoo culture were what really shaped my path. I spent countless hours studying old tattoo magazines and artwork, and that influence still shows in the way I tattoo today.

My work is rooted in traditional tattooing, but I approach it with a modern swing. I use varying line weights, bold imagery, and strong, readable designs that are built to last. Longevity and readability are extremely important to me — from choosing the right line weights and sizes, to proper placement, to not overpacking tattoos with color so they have room to age well over time.

The experience of getting tattooed matters just as much to me as the tattoo itself. I believe that once you build a bond with a client, they become more than just a client — they become friends, and sometimes family. Creating a comfortable, honest environment is a big part of what I do, and something I take a lot of pride in.

Over the years, I’ve seen tattooing evolve in countless ways — from application techniques and equipment, to shop environments and the culture surrounding tattooing as a whole. Watching that progression, while still staying rooted in tradition, is what keeps me excited about tattooing after all these years.

While I respect all forms of tattooing, I choose to focus on what I do best. Portraits and micro tattoos aren’t my wheelhouse, and there are many talented artists who specialize in those styles. My passion lies in bold, traditional tattoos that hold up, stay readable, and carry the weight of a long-standing tradition — whether they have deep meaning or are simply classic images that have stood the test of time.

I’m located just minutes from downtown Columbus at 697 East Broad Street in the Posh Suites building. I accept both walk-ins and appointments, and I’m always happy to work with clients to create tattoos they’ll be proud of for years to come.

Tattooing isn’t just my job — it’s my craft, and something I’m grateful to still be doing every day.
